biolitec AG achieved consolidated sales of Euro 30.5 million for the fiscal year 2008/2009 – EBIT amounts to Euro 0.31 million – sales growth in Asia, South America and Middle East
LIFE™ laser therapy for prostate treatment and ELVeS® PainLess laser treatment remain major sales items – R&D expenditures with Euro 3.2 million on a high level – due to successful restructuring measures positive net income of Euro 0.64 million
Jena, September 30, 2009 – biolitec AG, Jena, listed in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt stock exchange (ISIN DE0005213409), generated consolidated sales of 30.5 million for the fiscal year 2008/2009 (previous year: Euro 35.4 million). The decrease in turn-over is essentially due to the current economic crisis in the USA and Europe. The unfavorable investment climate worldwide, the low US dollar exchange rate and the reticence of the economic operators fearing an ongoing recession have decreased sales in 2008/2009 by about 14 percent compared to the previous year.
The gross profit amounted to Euro 21.4 million (previous year: Euro 23.9 million) and the EBIT Euro 0.31 million. R&D expenditures amounting to Euro 3.2 million in the fiscal year 2008/2009 (14 per-cent of turnover) remained at a high level, but have been reduced by Euro 1.84 million compared to the previous year.
Major turnover components are the treatments of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) LIFE™ , and the endoluminal treatment of veins (ELVeS™).
Dr. Wolfgang Neuberger, CEO of biolitec AG: ‘We have achieved significant progress with the further improvement of our vein treat-ment ELVeS® PainLess by the first radial (360° all around) emitting laser fiber ELVeS® RADIAL and its market launch. Our high-power laser Evolve™ 180 with the new TWISTER™ fiber facilitates an even more gentle and comfortable treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia.’
Due to the initiated restructuring measures, in this fiscal year a net income of Euro 0.64 million (previous year: Euro 1.98 million) was generated despite the still high R&D expenditures and the decline in sales. Liquid assets are over Euro 6 million at the end of the fiscal year.
The segment optical fibers/ laser probes in decreased slightly to Euro 20.7 million in 2008/2009. The turnover of the laser segment with Euro 8 million was significantly lower than in the previous year, primarily because of the recession in the US markets and Europe. In the pharma sector biolitec achieved a turnover increase by 21 per-cent to Euro 1.7 million.
The essential turnovers of biolitec have been generated in Europe and North America. The turnover in North America amounted to Euro 11 million and was significantly lower than in the previous year. Sales in Europe were Euro 15.5 million (previous year: 17.9 million). Dr. Wolfgang Neuberger, CEO of biolitec: ‘In Asia and the Rest of the World, biolitec achieved a significant turnover increase by 43 percent. In South America and the Middle East, affiliates founded in 2008 are already profitable and contribute to turnover. Our core business optical fibers/ laser probes secures our market position, so that we can successfully manage the further growth in Asia, South America and the Middle East. In the course of this fiscal year we expect an increase in revenue and profit due to our worldwide expansion.’
