Hesse is home to Germany's first out-patient prostate treatment center

A new form of laser therapy has made it possible, for the first time, to gently remove prostate tissue without secondary bleeding - Dr. Daniel Romitan from Maintal offers urological laser treatment LIFETM at Germany's first out-patient treatment center - The therapy enables short treatment durations, quick recovery and only slight post-operative risks

Jena/Maintal, February 26, 2008 – At his urology practice in Maintal in Hesse, private urologist Dr. Daniel Romitan is offering patients with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH, or benign prostate enlargement) a new and gentle form of laser treatment, LIFE™ laser therapy. This is the first time this treatment has been made available on an out-patient basis. This means that the specialist’s patients can go home after their BPH treatment without any hospitalization. In addition, the innovative LIFE™ laser treatment with the urology laser Evolve™ 150 from biolitec AG allows the common male problem of prostate enlargement to be treated without expensive and time-consuming operations and anesthesia and with little risk of side effects. The practice in Hesse, together with a number of other BPH treatment centers that currently offer the therapy on an in-patient basis, use a special, state-of-the art laser.

The high-power laser Evolve™ 150 enables efficient removal of prostate tissue in just 15 to 30 minutes (depending on the volume of tissue to be removed), while also avoiding secondary bleeding. This means that, for the first time, patients taking anticoagulant medication can also be treated. Reduced stress and side effects mean that patients are spared a stay in hospital, enabling treatment of BPH on an out-patient basis. LIFE™ laser treatment also cuts the length of time spent on after-care, while substantially reducing the risks of impotence and incontinence.

“Working with the new laser is extremely satisfying and has many advantages”, explains Dr. Romitan, urology specialist in Maintal. “Thanks to its excellent performance, hemorrhaging is a thing of the past and we can now send our patients home after treatment with confidence. This makes us the first center in all of Germany to treat BPH on an out-patient basis”. The doctor also adds: “Another benefit is the laser’s compact size. It is easily transported and can be used in different treatment rooms, which allows for flexible planning and greater efficiency. Our patients ultimately benefit from the time we save.”

The current demographic trend – a good half of all men over 60 and almost all over 80 suffer from benign prostate enlargement – suggests that instances of the illness will continue to increase. Therefore, increasing patient demand for the new, gentler laser therapy can also be expected. Dr. Romitan’s stated, long-term objective is to establish and develop his urology practice in Maintal as an out-patient center for innovation, to stand alongside the other LIFE™ in-patient laser centers that have been set up throughout Germany.
