The 9 month turnover 2009/2010 is almost at the level of the previous year. Furthermore, biolitec clearly improved the profit situation due to the initiated rationalization and diversification strategies and the strengthening of the global presence.
The business segment pharmaceuticals has achieved considerable success in the third quarter with the Dutch cost reimbursement of the head and neck cancer drug Foscan®. Concerning the cancer therapy with biolitec’s approved medication patients now can get free treatment with this new PDT drug in the Netherlands. Due to an initiated cost benefit study of the Dutch health authority with leading hospitals and academic centres in the Netherlands, leading experts are confident, that the high-tech treatment will emerge as an important and cost effective treatment option in Europe and more patients will profit from the reimbursement in the future. As a recently published study shows, 68% of the patients (characterized as otherwise untreatable) respond to Foscan PDT treatment. The probability of living another five years tumor-free is 27% for these patients, who were otherwise unresponsive to further treatment – with photodynamic therapy and the medication Foscan® healing now seems possible even in such cases.
biolitec’s reimbursable methods of treatment such as the innovative vein treatment ELVeS® PainLess or the BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) treatment LIFE™ are a sound basis for biolitec’s long-term growth. Our focus to generate per procedure revenue through disposable and pharma sales has already become noticeable in the fiber optics segment with an increase of turnover by 6% to 16.46 million Euro.
The major revenues came from Europe and North America. With 8.5 million Euro, sales in North America were at the previous years level. Sales in Europe decreased by 12% to 10.4 million Euro (previous year: 11.9 million).
The number of employees has stabilized at the level of 222. In the first nine month of the fiscal year 2009/10, our expenditures in research and development remained on a high level.
For the fourth quarter biolitec expects the business performance to remain stable.
